Book = Linear Algebra with Applications, 5th Ed, O. Bretscher, Prentice Hall.

08/22/18

Attendance will be recorded, starting today.
Read course syllabus carefully. Make a note of the test dates in your calendar. Review course website and repeat frequently during the semester.
Read https://vancliff.utasites.cloud/T/study.pdf and read https://www.jeffreybennett.com/pdf/How_to_Succeed_general.pdf for ideas on how to study most effectively.

Read lecture notes (meaning the notes you should have taken during class) & Sec 1.1 &
do Sec 1.1: 2, 11-13, 16, 17. Try some practice quizzes.

08/27/18

Read lecture notes & do Sec 1.1: 19, 22 (note: Emile is a male name and Gertrude is a female name), 26, 31, 33,38, 45, 46, 50.
Read lecture notes & Sec 1.2. Do Sec 1.2: 1-4, 6, 8, 18, 21, 26, 27, 31, 43, 47, 48, 63.
Try some practice quizzes.

08/29/18
The following results are restatements of some of the results in Sec 1.3 and will be assumed in all future lectures.

Theorem L1

If we have m linear equations in n variables, then the coefficient matrix A has m rows and n columns (size m by n), and
(a) rank(A) ≤ m and rank(A) ≤ n, and the number of free variables = (total number of variables) – rank(A);
(b) if rank(A) = m, then the system is consistent;
(c) if rank(A) = n, then the system has at most 1 solution (could be none);
(d) if rank(A) < n, then the system has either has either no solution or infinitely many.
Reasoning: 1st part of (a) observed in class today by a student and is to do with definition of rref(A); 2nd part of (a) is owing to the free variables coming from columns of rref of coefficient matrix that do not contain a pivot, so the number of free variables is given by the total number of columns – the total number of pivots and hence equals the total number of variables – rank(A). The hypothesis in (b) means that every row of the rref of the coefficient matrix has a pivot and hence the equation 0 =1 cannot occur. The hypothesis in (c) means that every column of the rref of the coefficient matrix has a pivot and hence there are no free variables, so the system has a finite number of solutions or none, so a unique solution or none. The hypothesis in (d) means that at least one column of the rref of the coefficient matrix does not have a pivot in it and so the system has 1 or more free variables, and so the system has either an infinite number of solutions or is inconsistent.

Theorem L2

A linear system with fewer equations than variables has either no solution or infinitely many.
Reasoning: Hypothesis implies that m < n in Theorem L1, so Theorem L1(a) implies that rank(A) ≤ m , but m < n , and rank(A) < n, so use (d) of Theorem L1.

Theorem L3

Suppose m = n in Theorem L1. If rank(A) < n, then there is either no solution or infinitely many. However, if rank(A) = n, then the system has a unique solution.
Reasoning: rank(A) < n implies use (d) of Theorem L1. rank(A) = n implies rank(A) = n = m, so use (b) and (c) of Theorem L1.

Theorem L4

If m = n in Theorem L1, then the linear system has a unique solution if and only if rank(A) = n.
Reasoning: This is a restatement of Theorem L3.

Read lecture notes & Sec 1.3 & do: 1-7, 9-20. Try some practice quizzes.

By this time, you have seen quite a few theorems. It is best NOT to memorize the theorems, but to do enough of the homework that the results of the theorems become known to you, though perhaps with different wording or using pictures.
